Suzanne Vankat Is February DAISY Award Winner
Suzanne Vankat, a nurse on the 8 South Medical-Surgical Unit at Methodist Hospital, was honored at a recognition ceremony on Thursday, February 20, as the February DAISY award winner.
She was nominated for the honor by a surgical patient who described Suzanne as "my angel that day."
The patient praised Suzanne not only for her professional skill but for her personal attention, exceptional kindness and willingness to do everything possible to help reduce the patient's excruciating pain.
Suzanne's supervisor applauds her for not only for using every resource to safely manage the patient's pain -- including bringing care team members from Surgery, Pulmonary and Anesthesia together at the patient's bedside to modify the treatment plan -- but also for the way she continued to soothe and comfort the patient. With a calm voice and gentle touch, Suzanne helped the patient with deep breathing, moist washcloths, guided imagery and other techniques.
"Suzanne never left my side for three hours. She never let me give up and stood by me until I was transferred to the ICU," the patient wrote. "I will never forget all she did for me. She truly is the Meaning of Care."
The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Nurses can be nominated by anyone, including patients, family members, physicians, supervisors or their peers.
