Methodist Adopting IDDSI Framework With Patient Safety in Mind

There is an upcoming change to diet textures and fluid consistencies at Methodist Hospital, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital and Methodist Women’s Hospital.

We will be implementing the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) framework on March 3, 2020.

The goal of the IDDSI framework is to standardize the terminology and criteria for varying levels of diet textures and fluid consistencies, ensuring consistency and increasing safety for individuals with swallowing and chewing difficulties within health care facilities as well as in the event that patients move from one facility to another.

The IDDSI framework consists of a continuum of eight levels (0-7). Levels are identified by text labels, numbers and color codes to improve safety and identification. The standardized descriptors and testing methods will allow for consistent production.
