Haley Guthrie Is January's Good Catch Award Winner
The Good Catch Award is designed to recognize staff members committed to patient safety.
This recognition is presented monthly and goes to the department in which the good catch occurred. Nominations for the award are taken from reported variances where a near miss is caught. Those variances are flagged for consideration of this award. A near miss is an incident or event that has occurred and had the potential to cause harm but was caught before it reached the patient.
Methodist Women's Hospital
The January Good Catch Award goes to Haley Guthrie, RN, a nurse at in the Mother/Baby Unit at Methodist Women's Hospital.
The RN caring for this newborn brought the baby into the nursery for the nursery RN to perform a hearing screen. The nursery RN, Haley Guthrie, stated she thought the baby seemed jaundiced for how old he was. A TcBili was performed and found to be critical. A serum Bili was collected and still found to be high. The pediatrician was notified and a NNP consult was ordered. Double bank phototherapy was initiated on the baby, along with supplementation. Haley's astute attention to the newborn's condition allowed for prompt intervention for hyperbilirubinemia.
Congratulations, Haley! Thank you for your commitment to keeping our patients safe.
