Brian Wilson, BSN, RN, from the Methodist Hospital Progressive Care Unit on 6 North, was honored at a recognition ceremony on Dec. 6 as November’s DAISY Award winner for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women’s Hospital.

His nomination came from a patient who spent several days in the hospital recovering from surgery and illness. And while the patient was impressed by all those who took care of him, he was astounded by Brian’s attentive care.

“Brian stood out like a beacon of light on a dark night,” the patient wrote. “His care was excellent, professional, but most of all he communicated deep care for me. Many nights he came in and did his professional duties, blood pressures, etc. Never rushed, never hurried. Then, he would do the extraordinary – he would sit on the edge of my bed and ask me about my day. How was I feeling? How was I holding up as I healed? Was there anything he could do that would make my night easier, and we drifted from nurse/patient to two friends sharing things we both liked.”

The patient said that he and Brian connected so deeply, that he and his wife wished they could adopt their attentive young nurse. A tracheostomy patient living with diabetes, he wrote about how the sugar-free popsicles Brian would deliver soothed his tender throat. He also noted how Brian was quick to respond to medical emergencies whenever they would arise.

“If we were talking and Brian need to tend to an emergency, he was gone! The way it should be, someone needed immediate medical help and he was there!” the patient wrote. “However, 15-20 minutes later, crisis averted, patient helped, here comes Brian with my popsicle, apologizing to me that he had to leave so abruptly! Imagine, apologizing to me!”

Above all, the patient remarked about how he appreciated Brian’s professional and humble service.

“When I look into Brian’s eyes, I see the deep, sincere eyes of a shepherd, for our eyes show our soul, and Brian cares deeply for his sheep; what more can I say?”
