Trudy Robeson, RN, from the Methodist Hospital Short Stay Unit, was honored at a recognition ceremony on October 17 as the October DAISY Award winner for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital.

Trudy was nominated by a surgical patient who described her as "an angel here on earth."

The patient wrote about feeling nervous, both about surgery and about going home with the necessary catheter. Trudy was the "very nice nurse" who put on the patient's catheter bag just before discharge, easing the patient's mind while going over instructions to follow while recovering at home. The more the two talked, they realized they lived not far from one another. As Trudy helped the patient into the car, Trudy said, "If you ever need ANYTHING, please call me. Here's my number."

This kind offer was unexpectedly put to the test. Later, at home, the patient caught a foot in the tubing, pulling the catheter out.

"I didn't know what to do, but then remembered the nurse had given me her number," the patient wrote. "So I called her, and she came over!"

Trudy quickly discovered some additional supplies were needed.

"She told me, 'I'll be right back,' and drove all the way to the hospital [for supplies] and back to my house," the patient wrote. " I don't know what I would have done without her!"

Trudy stayed with the patient for nearly two hours, giving care and assistance. Trudy also insisted on a next-day follow-up with the patient's primary care provider.

"She is one of a kind and went above and beyond!" the patient wrote. "She didn't think so, but I sure did!"
