Methodist Jennie Edmundson Offers Free Skin Cancer Screening: June 29
Methodist Jennie Edmundson will hold its 21st annual free skin cancer screening on Thursday, June 29, 5 - 7 p.m., in the Outpatient Surgery area, inside the east entrance of the hospital.
Physicians and dermatologists will offer to conduct a spot check or optional full-body exam. A copy of the screening results will be provided to each participant and their physician if requested. Free information on the prevention of skin cancer will also be available.
At last year’s event, Methodist Jennie Edmundson screened 142 Council Bluffs area residents. Five cancer cases and 55 pre-cancerous cases were discovered and treated.
In 2017, an estimated 87,000 new cases of melanoma will diagnosed in the United States, and melanoma will cause more than 9,700 deaths.
Fortunately, most skin cancers, including melanoma, can be cured if detected early. But, according to a survey by the American Academy of Dermatology, most Americans don’t know the warning signs of melanoma and only about one-third examine their skin for signs of skin cancer. That makes public screenings such as this one so valuable.
