Nihsen Part of Team Working to Reduce Maternal Mortality

As difficult as it might seem to believe, the facts are that while the United States spends more on health care than most any other developed country, our nation's maternal mortality rate is among the highest in the world.

Ashley Nihsen, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital's director of the birthing center, and her staff are working to make certain women who chose Jennie Edmundson to have their children are not among that statistic.

In Iowa, during 2003-2007 the maternal mortality rate was 9.6 per 100,000 live births, well below the national average of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 live births.
