Program Raises Awareness about Human Trafficking

Speakers at Healthwise program at Jennie Edmundson Hospital want the public to get wise to human traffickers.

There are more human trafficking victims in the U.S. today than ever, Carrie Potter, sexual assault coordinator at Catholic Charities Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, formerly known as the Phoenix House, said during a presentation.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing and second-largest criminal industry in the world (second only to drug trafficking and tied with illegal arms), according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The sex trade is now a $150 billion-per-year industry. Pornography, strip clubs and prostitution help fuel demand.
